A mobile broadband craze is sweeping the country this summer as internet addicted Brits demand constant access to the high-speed internet using their laptops.

Recent research by T-Mobile Broadband has found that broadband through laptops is now such an important part of everyday life that Brits want to be able to take it with them absolutely everywhere this summer - even to the beach!



Mobile Broadband Is The New Beach Must-Have
Just under half of us (44%) think we should have access to the internet anywhere in the UK, but many are still stuck with the constraints of a fixed line connection. The beach may be an unusual place to want access to the internet, but one fifth of those questioned most want mobile broadband here.

Surf & Sup In Pub Gardens Also In Demand
Brits also stated other prime summer locations such as the pub, park and garden as their most desired places to get online. A fresh-air loving 44% of us want to log on whilst relaxing in the back garden, 32% want to be able to dial-up whilst on holiday and 8% want to surf and sup in pub gardens.

Richard Warmsley, Head of Internet and Entertainment services at T-Mobile said: “Mobile broadband has reached a tipping point and is now hitting the mainstream. Last year our research showed that only 3% of office workers wanted to work from the beach: one year on, the latest figures show that a staggering 44% of us now want to use the internet on the go, and an incredible 21% would like to use it at the beach.”

The research signals a huge shift in consumer opinion around broadband services. Consumers are used to taking their laptops out and about with them and they now expect to be connected to the Internet - whether that’s in the garden, at the office or in the park.

T-Mobile has unveiled a range of improvements to its mobile broadband network that offers customers a faster mobile broadband experience with improved upload network performance and cheaper price plans from £10 per month.



Faster Mobile Broadband Experience
T-Mobile is in the process of upgrading its 3G network to offer mobile broadband speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, initially within the M25 but rolling out to other major cities during the second half of 2008.

Improved Upload Network Performance
T-Mobile has switched on the UK’s first nationwide fast upload network, ‘HSUPA’ - the mobile broadband upload service that lets users upload and share photos and videos to websites like Facebook at speeds of up to 1.4Mbps.

Cheaper Price Plans With Mobile Broadband Now £10 p/m
New customers signing up online for the T-Mobile Broadband Plus 24-month tariff can take advantage of a £5 discount for the first three months, reducing the monthly charge to just £10.

Access to more than 1,000 WiFi HotSpots in key social and business locations such as Starbucks, airports and selected train services is also included in the £10 per month tariff.

The Carphone Warehouse are now offering a range of mobile broadband with free laptop deals with prices starting from just £29 a month.

The company is reselling the mobile broadband packages offered by T-Mobile, Orange and 3 and bundling them with a free laptop worth over £350.

The free laptop is an Acer Aspire 5315 which has an 80Gb hard drive and 1Gb of RAM. The laptop has a DVD rewriter and comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic. It’s also wireless enabled.



All the mobile broadband with free laptop deals come with a free USB modem stick (dongle) which you plug into the USB port of your free laptop for mobile broadband access.

The packages from T-Mobile, Orange and 3 offer mobile broadband speeds up to 2.8Mb and come with a 3Gb monthly download usage allowance. Contract periods vary from 18 to 24 months.

Orange Mobile Broadband (marketed as Broadband Without A Landline) launches today offering the Internet everywhere for just £15 a month when you order online.

You’ll receive a free Orange USB modem dongle (called the Option Icon 225) that you simply plug into your desktop or laptop which connects you to the Orange mobile network wherever you are in the UK.



You’ll get mobile broadband speeds up to 1.8Mbps and a 3Gb monthly download usage allowance - which is plenty to surf the web, check emails and do some downloading.

BT have extended their Total Broadband range with BT Total Broadband Anywhere which includes the BT ToGo phone for calls, texts and mobile broadband access across the country.

BT Total Broadband Anywhere is the UK’s most complete broadband package in and out of the home. With it you’ll get up to 8Mb wireless broadband in and around the home using the free BT Home Hub, plus unlimited mobile broadband using the the BT ToGo handset and the thousands of BT Openzone and BT FON wi-fi hotspots around the country.



This unique home and mobile broadband package from BT costs £23.99 per month for the first three months followed by £29.99 a month thereafter and is available on an 18 month contract.

The latest Vodafone Mobile Broadband adverts says its service is the fastest, most reliable mobile broadband in the galaxy - And only £15 a month.

We’re not quite sure about the galaxy part, but certainly in the UK Vodafone’s mobile broadband means you can download music and movies at speeds up to 7.2Mbps on your laptop, which is as quick as most home broadband and 14 times faster than standard 3G.



It’s also super reliable. You simply plug in the compact USB stick modem (Vodafone dongle) into your laptop and get online straight away with Vodafone’s fantastic mobile broadband coverage in the UK and abroad.

Vodafone have halved the price of its mobile broadband to just £15 a month for 3GB of web browsing and downloads. Alternatively, you can get a massive 5GB a month for £25 a month.

With 3GB you can browse the web for 100 hours, download 200 tunes and 100 video clips, plus send 2000 emails. If you want to keep an eye on how much you’re doing online, Vodafone’s mobile broadband dashboard gives you an idea of the data you’ve used.

With speeds up to 1.8Mb, O2 Mobile Broadband (for laptops) has now launched with prices starting from £20 a month with a free O2 USB modem dongle included.

There’s a 3Gb monthly data download allowance with users not being charged for going over this until the 31st October 2008 - thanks to a special promotion being run by O2.



The free USB modem dongle is available when you sign up to an 18 month contract, otherwise its a one off £119.99 if you take the rolling 1 month contract instead (known as O2 pay as you go mobile broadband / no contract mobile broadband)

You’ll also get unlimited access to 7,500 Wi-Fi hotspot locations in the UK through O2’s tie up with wi-fi specialists, The Cloud.

You can now get free mobile broadband dongles from 3, Vodafone and T-Mobile.

Dongles is a collective term used to describe the USB modems or USB sticks that you place into the USB port on your laptop to enable wireless access to the internet at broadband speeds.



The dongle connects your laptop to the 3G broadband network of the mobile phone operator which means you can have mobile broadband access pretty much anywhere in the UK and Europe.

Therefore, you can use your laptop to surf the web or check your emails from wherever you want as opposed to fixed line home broadband or the various wireless hotspots (wi-fi) available in hotels, cafes and airports.

Mobile broadband prices start from just £10 a month for speeds ranging from 2Mb to 7Mb. Prices can vary depending upon the contract period you choose (12, 18 or 24 months), whilst there’s also pay as you go mobile broadband (known as no contract mobile broadband) available.
