BT has teamed up with Cashbox, a leading supplier of ATM cash machines in the UK, to offer BT Wi-Fi Broadband hotspots at Cashbox’s 2,500 UK cash machines.

The 5 year deal will help boost Wi-Fi broadband connections across the country, with homes and businesses near the cash machines set to benefit once BT has integrated the Wi-Fi technology into the machines.

To start with, there will only be 10 ATM’s that are upgraded by BT, however, when the upgrade is finished there will be 2,500 ATM’s installed with the new Wi-Fi broadband capabilities.

The CEO of Cashbox, Ciaran Morton, said, “As a customer focused business, we are continually looking for ways to extend our service offering, and with exciting initiatives such as this we are providing our customers with additional opportunities to utilise the ATM machines. May was an all time record month for transaction levels as people are finding cash preferable to credit in the current economic climate.”

The General Manager of BT Openzone, Chris Bruce, said, “We are seeing huge demand for Wi-Fi in the leisure and hospitality sector. BT customers can also connect at over 190,000 residential and commercial hotspots in the UK and Ireland including BAA airports, BA lounges, Caffe Nero, Hilton, Thistle and Ramada Jarvis hotels and, from July 2009, Starbucks coffee stores.”

There are currently 4.8 million BT Broadband customers who have inclusive Wi-Fi minutes in their contracts that can be used at BT Openzone Hotspots.

It has yet to be announced which 10 Cashbox ATM’s will initially benefit from the Wi-Fi upgrade.

As BT pushes ahead with its plans for 60Mbps fibre optic broadband speeds by 2010, Virgin Media has now announced that its current network is capable of up to 200Mbps broadband.

The Chief Executive of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, said, “We have an opportunity with our network to provide significantly higher speeds.”

Virgin Media’s current network offers broadband speeds of up to 50Mbps, but BT has since announced that its new fibre optic network will offer speeds of up to 60Mbps.

BT plan to have their new speeds ready for parts of the UK by 2010 and to 40% of UK homes & businesses by 2012, but Neil Berkett claims the transition to faster speeds will be a “function of timing”.

In his statement he said: “When we look at the market I don’t see us getting returns right now for 100 or 150Mbps broadband. As we work with application providers and content providers, there will be a natural point where we upgrade from 10, 20 and 50Mbps to something more.”

He continued, “If BT were to meet the time frame they have suggested – of finishing by 2012 – I would see us as having much faster upstream speeds together with running at a minimum of 100Mbps downstream and possibly more. You can see a real opportunity there.”

Only time will tell if BT can offer its new super-fast broadband speeds in the time stated. If not, then it seems there will be an even faster alternative available from its rival.
